Why I chose to make this costume:
My Husband kept talking about the idea that if I went dressed as Evie Frye he would like to go as Jacob. Since he had never cosplayed before I thought that taking part in the couple's cosplay contest at Fan Expo Vancouver would be a great excuse to get him in costume!
How I made this costume:
Since it was my Husband's first costume we bought a few pieces from Value Village like the pants, belts and jacket. We already owned the top hat and Jacob's cane, so I went ahead and made him the vest, cravat, cummerbund and spats.
I chose a sewing pattern that was close to the design of Jacob's vest. I ended up finding perfect fabric at Value Village that was the same green with floral design, but it had some gold in it rather than silver. I stitched it together as per the pattern and added bias tape to finish off all the edges. I also added a pocket to the front where he could keep his pocket watch.
For the cummerbund I just used a long piece of red fabric, measured it around his waist and added velcro to the ends. Using the same fabric and following a YouTube tutorial I made the cravat.
For the spats, I started by making pattern pieces out of masking tape and saran wrap. Wrapped up his legs, taped 'em up and drew the design on top. From here I cut out the fabric pieces and stitched them together. I then placed them back over his legs to figure out where the hem should be and where the snaps would be inserted. Finally I added a small elastic to the bottom of the spats that would go under neath his shoes. I tried to add some elastic to the top so they wouldn't fall down, but it ended up not working out.
Thoughts on this costume:
Overall I felt this costume turned out really well. I know my husband was rather happy with it and really enjoyed his first time in cosplay!
